Octavo Train

Learn to read music —
on the fretboard or with note names.

A note appears in the treble or bass clef; you answer on guitar, bass or the note-name keys. Short sessions, an adaptive scoreboard, everything offline.

How it works

One note. One fret. Next.

No menus, no stressful score — just the loop that turns note reading into muscle memory.

01

A note appears

In the treble or bass clef, within your practice range — on the staff or on the ledger lines. Never the same note twice in a row.

02

You answer

On the fretboard, the bass or the note names. For string instruments the note and the string both have to match — the target string is highlighted.

03

Straight on

Right, wrong or revealed. Hear the target note or show its exact position — then the next note arrives.

Features

Built for how you actually practise

Treble & bass clef

Both clefs, with ledger lines above and below. You set the practice range freely.

Guitar, bass or note names

Fretboard view for guitar and four-string bass, with a selectable fret range — or note-name keys for pure reading.

Adaptive scoreboard

Each note gets a score from speed, hit rate and misses. Weak notes come up more often, solid ones less.

Three training modes

By count, with a time limit, or free with no scoring. At the end: a session summary with time per note.

German & international notation

Switch between c′, H and C4, B4 — read it the way you learned it.

Offline & account-free

No network, no ads, no login. A setup assistant configures language, notation, instrument and practice range on first launch.

Instruments

The note lands where your finger does

The fretboard shows fret numbers, the nut and fret markers — so you can name where you tapped.

  • Note-name keyboard — One octave in a piano layout, for pure note reading without an instrument.
  • Target string highlighted — For guitar and bass the note and string are both checked; the string in question lights up.
  • Bass notation +12 — Sounding pitch and written pitch are kept cleanly apart.
  • Landscape-first — The fretboard stays within thumb reach when the tablet is flat on the table.
